Dr. Chen treats patients
4 to 22 years old

Dr. Chen provides psychiatric medication management for patients 4 to 22 years old. Patients will not age out of Dr. Chen's practice, but Dr. Chen will not accept new patients outside this age range.

Dr. Chen meets with patients on average once a month and incorporates therapy techniques during her appointments. However, she recommends patients have a separate designated therapist to meet with at least bi-weekly.

To better accommodate the shortage of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, Dr. Chen is unable to provide therapy only services at this time.

Diagnostic Evaluation or Consultation

60 minutes (Adult) or 75 minutes (Pediatric)

Dr. Chen values a strength-based and collaborative treatment approach with her patients. During your assessment, Dr. Chen will carefully review your symptoms and their context, including your developmental history, medical history, genetic predispositions and contributing psychosocial stressors. This comprehensive approach leads to a better understanding of a patient's presentation and better treatment outcomes.

For pediatric evaluations, parent(s) and child must be present for the evaluation. If parents are divorced, both parents must consent to treatment. Generally, Dr. Chen will meet initially with the family together before spending 30-45 minutes with the child/adolescent individually. She will reconvene with the family for the remaining 15-20 minutes to share her clinical impression and treatment recommendations with the family.

Included in all evaluations is time outside of the appointment for Dr. Chen to review medical records (such as neuropsychological testing reports, medical chart from previous providers, etc.) and share her treatment recommendations with your primary care provider. If consent is provided, it also includes time to communicate with therapists, schools, and other providers.

Please note: A new patient may not receive a prescription at the end of an initial assessment if Dr. Chen believes further evaluation is required. To best help make the initial evaluation as efficient as possible, please complete all intake paperwork 48 business hours prior to the start of your appointment. This allows Dr. Chen time to review your information to better direct your evaluation and formulate her clinical impression and treatment recommendations. After your initial consultation, Dr. Chen will also communicate her treatment recommendations to your primary care provider.

Medication Management with Therapy

25 minutes or 45 minutes

Most medication follow up appointments are scheduled monthly for 25 minutes. The frequency of your appointments may be spaced out further if symptoms are stable. When first starting treatment or during a period of worsening symptoms, Dr. Chen may ask to see you more frequently and/or for a longer appointment to help you achieve your treatment goals as quickly as possible.  Dr. Chen incorporates elements of Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy into her medication management appointments.
